Now I'm thinking about completely abandoning 5x5 and looking for some kind of exercise routine that is more geared towards bjj, not sure what that is yet. All those heavy backsquats actually fee like a bit of a liability. I'm stocky and stiff and very inflexible. I'm totally hooked, but I feel like my body is about the worst possible for bjj. Recently I tried to mix it up and took a jiu jitsu class. I haven't gotten injured and never missed a gym day in over a year. Form is still not great, but my max lifts actually went DOWN once I tried to go back to 5x5. Still plateaued, I went down in weight and did reps of 10 instead of 5 and really concentrated on my form.

I added a 4rth and 5th day of cardio/freeweights in between SL days.

I plateaued very quickly, but stuck at it. I started SL5x5 a little over a year ago at age 39, and after a very sedentary life and never being athletic. Now if you want to look as good as possible in 3 months, Hypertrophy straight away is better,but long term it's better both for your health and size to start out focusing mainly on strength first. A program like PHAT or PH3, both by Layne Norton combine both and are great programs once you've built up a solid base from SS, Stronglift 5x5 or any other noob strength program. Long term it is important to also do heavy strength training to be able to lift heavier weights when you do hypertrophy workouts. Hypertrophy and strength also overlap hard.

You won't build rome in a day and it's better to start learning how to walk before you start running. At the start you need more time to rest, you have to build up strength and technique so it's good that it's easy and straight forward. After a while you get less and less sore up until a point where you just get that slightly sore,good feeling for a day. You get sore for a week the first 2-3 times. When you start out lifting, if you are weak and skinny, you need a lot of time to rest. LL: Determine your goals and consider a hypertrophy program. I understand that this is a matter of preference, but I would presume that the majority of RPers would have more interest in their aesthetic development than what 5x5 has to offer. Besides that, I’d consider shifting your priorities from strength to hypertrophy. The only redeeming quality of 5x5 in my opinion is that lifting 3x a week seems more inviting to rookie lifters.

The increase in frequency will most certainly speed the development of muscle mass, and probably aid in losing weight as well. If you want better visual results, I’d suggest hitting the gym 4-6 times a week and upping the rep range from 5 per set to the 8-12 range. Unless you personally value getting stronger, I’d suggest going with a hypertrophy-oriented program instead (one that focuses on developing muscle mass.) 5x5 is only three times a week, which is far from optimal for building muscle. Strong Lifts 5x5 is a strength-oriented program. I too spent my first year of lifting doing 5x5, and I sure as hell benefited from it, but that doesn’t mean the program was good. They ask for programs and usually get told to start with SL 5x5. A lot of guys on here are making the move to start lifting.
